Taiwan’s largest carrier, China Airlines, is close to finalizing a multi-billion dollar order for long-haul passenger jets, expected to split between Airbus and Boeing, reports Reuters. The airline is considering the Boeing 777X and Airbus A350-1000 to replace its aging fleet of Boeing 777-300ERs and accommodate future growth.
💡Industry sources suggest China Airlines could order up to 20 jets, potentially worth nearly US$4 billion, with the decision also influenced by the outcome of the US presidential election. The airline is also evaluating freighter options, with the political climate playing a role in the final choice. The decision is pending approval from the airline’s board.
Singapore
Singapore Airlines (SIA) reported a significant 59% decline in its net profit for the second quarter of FY2025, falling to S$290 million from S$707 million a year ago. Despite a 2% increase in revenue to S$4.8 billion, the airline’s performance was impacted by weaker operating results, lower net interest income, and losses on the disposal of aircraft and spares. These were partly offset by higher profits from associated companies and lower tax expenses.
For the first half of the financial year, SIA's net profit dropped by 48.5% to S$742 million, with revenue rising 3.7% to S$9.5 billion. The group saw strong passenger demand, carrying 19.2 million passengers, a 10.8% year-on-year increase. However, passenger load factors declined slightly as capacity growth outpaced traffic growth. Meanwhile, air freight volumes increased significantly, driven by e-commerce and ongoing sea freight disruptions.
💡SIA’s operating fleet now consists of 205 aircraft, with 84 more on order. The airline also announced a S$1.1 billion investment to retrofit its Airbus A350 fleet with new cabin products, slated for completion by 2030. Looking ahead, the airline expects strong demand for both air travel and freight but anticipates a competitive operating environment.
New Zealand
Pratt & Whitney and Air New Zealand have broken ground on a $150 million expansion of the Christchurch Engine Centre, aimed at boosting engine maintenance capacity. The 14,000 square-meter facility will support up to 140 GTF engine overhauls annually by 2032, with the first expected in 2026.
💡The project will create 200 new jobs and strengthen New Zealand’s aviation capabilities.
